My CIPR love affair
My CIPR love affair
20 August 2014
Exactly why do I want to be elected to the CIPR Full Council? Well I have a confession to make. I’ve been having an affair for twenty years. My husband knows of course. He was there when I first met the CIPR Local Public Service (CIPR LPS) group.
It was just the plain CIPR Local government group back then but it made an impact. I was in my twenties when I received the first seductive phone call “Congratulations you’ve been shortlisted for an Excellence award, you must come to the conference in Harrogate.”
In my first job in corporate PR, working on my own and wondering quite what I had taken on this sudden interest from people I had never heard of two months earlier was frankly flattering. I dragged my fiancé to Harrogate to come to the awards dinner with me.
The people I met at that first conference – Lynne Mee, John Brown, Liza Greaves, Pat Gaudin and Jane Easton O’Keefe – were so positive that I immediately felt I had found the support I needed. Long serving member of the CIPR LPS committee Liza was working nearby in Brighton and offered me support and advice on anything and everything for which I am truly grateful.
Over the years I went to the CIPR LPS conferences, developed my skills, won Excellence awards, became a Chartered Marketer, joined the CIPR, studied for an MBA and pursued my PR career. I have also made many great friends. And those wise colleagues I met in the early years were still happy to advise me in 2012 when I left local government to set up a consultancy and training firm working with many public sector clients.
Now it’s my turn to help those new to our profession and sector. I joined the CIPR LPS committee and am currently the Vice Chair of the group. I’m determined to provide the support and training for people in our sector that I had. It made all the difference to me.
Changes to the CIPR mean that from January 2015 none of the CIPR regional and sectoral groups automatically have a place on the CIPR Council, the main decision making body.
It’s vitally important that those working in the public sector and in the regions influence the direction of the institute. We do need to have a seat at the table. So I have been nominated by the CIPR LPS Committee
CIPR members will get the chance to vote for candidates from1 September. Please do vote.
