Book review:Everyday Communication Strategies by Amanda Coleman

This is a beautifully written book full of insights by someone who has spent her whole PR career managing tough issues as well as major crisis. Amanda knows the theory but also the reality of having to put it into practice.
It is the perfect partner to her other book Crisis Communications Strategies and I would certainly have the pair to hand on my bookshelf whether working in-house or agency.
The book is clearly written and well organised and I particularly liked the fact that Top Tips and Key Learning Points are brought out in separate boxes.
I was delighted to see that Ethical PR practice especially in the context of managing issues has its own chapter. This is where so many organisations fall into the trap of placing short term reputation management over long term reputation credibility. Amanda tackles this head on and provides sound advice on strategies to prevent it.
Throughout the book, Amanda provides lots of advice on steps PR professionals can take to avoid issues, to effectively analyse them and produce sound communications approaches. I was particularly pleased to see scenario planning included as working through organisational risks using scenarios helps get everyone on board in a practical way with the communications.
It was also good to see chapters on media and social media and discussion of the interaction between the two as issues emerge.
I’d recommend this to practitioners at any stage of their career and in any sector.
You never know when a seemingly innocuous issue can turn into a full blown crisis and having a clear manual to deal with it can provide reassurance and confidence to the stretched PR professional.
